| Resumo: | During the aging process the elderly go through physical, social and psychological, with may favor a psychological imbalance, especially in this age group, depression. In this context, it becomes relevant to the conduct of research involving the issue of depression among elderly residents in rural areas. This study aimed to determine the prevalence rates of depression, by sex and age, to describe the sociodemographic and economic self-reported morbidities and functional capacity of elderly patients with and without indication of depression, to compare the elderly with and without depression as indicative of the sociodemographic, economic, number of self-reported morbidity and disability; identify factors associated with the indication of depression. It is an analytical, cross-sectional observational study conducted with 850 elderly residents in the rural municipality of Uberaba, MG. Instruments were used: semi-structured questionnaire based on the OARS, Mini Mental State Examination, the Katz Index, Lawton and Brody Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale Short. According to the classification of the Geriatric Depression Scale Short, formed two groups: the elderly with indications of depression and the elderly who did not have that indicator. We calculated the prevalence rate. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and applied to the chi-square and t-test by using SPSS, version 17.0. For inclusion in the logistic regression model was considered p<0.10 and the associations were significant when p<0.05. This project was approved by the Ethics and Human Research of UFTM, Protocol No. 1477. The prevalence of depression indicative corresponded to 22.0%. In the group with depression indicative of a predominance of women, 60├70 years, married or living with a partner, an individual income of minimum wage and 4├ 9 years of study. The highlights were the morbidities: back problems, vision problems, hypertension and sleep problems. The highest percentage of elderly had seven or more comorbidities. Among those who showed no sign of depression, the highest percentages were for males, 60├ 70 years, married or living with a partner, an individual income of minimum wage and 4├9 years of study. Major morbidities were vision problems, back problems, hypertension and sleep problems. Predominated the elderly with 1├4 associated morbidities. There was a higher percentage of older adults with depression that were indicative of 1├4 disabilities to perform IADLs, compared to those without such information. It was found among the elderly with depression indicative of a higher proportion of women aged 80 or older, widowed, uneducated, who have seven or more comorbidities and greater dependency on the performance of IADL, compared to the elderly without indicative of depression. This research showed that being female, having higher number of comorbidities and functional disability for the performance of IADL remained tense as predictors of depression. The results of this research may support the implementation of strategies for the health of the elderly residents of rural areas, focusing on depression. |
