Resumo:ABSTRACT This integrative review was performed with the objective to evaluate the available evidence regarding the factors associated with maintaining the breastfeeding of preterm newborns. The search was performed on the MEDLINE and LILACS databases using the descriptors “breast feeding” and “infant, premature”. The sample included twenty studies with an evidence level of 2 and 4, which pointed out facilitating and hindering aspects associated with maintaining breastfeeding. There is a need for multidisciplinary interventions in the health follow-up program, including educational strategies that promote mother-baby attachment and family welcoming. Special care should be given to the social, economical and cultural conditions of the family, as well as the clinical demands of the preterm newborns to maintain breastfeeding. Descriptors: Breast Feeding; Nursing; Infant, Premature; Weaning.
