| Sumario: | Brazilian Portuguese has alternative forms to express sentential negation. Among them, there is double negation, a negative structure that is used in different ways in several Brazilian regions. This study investigates the possible pragmatic functions of sentences with double negation found in 12 sociolinguistic interviews with native speakers from Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in the beginning of the 90s. The data analysis shows that sentences with double negation were used to instantiate two pragmatic functions: denegation and return to quantitative topic. |
