Resumo:The family has moved away from its traditional form, due to the social and cultural changes which have occurred over the years, and, because of this, some other forms of "modern" families have emerged. This study has the following main objectives: check the types of grandparents-grandchildren’s relationships, as well as the values transmitted by the grandparents to their grandchildren and analyze the role of intergenerational grandparent-grandchildren relations in the development of children. It is an exploratory study and no other study in Portugal was found to help us. 120 children of the 1ST cycle of basic education, 8 teachers and 200 grandparents and parents participated in this study. Semi-structured interviews were used to teachers, parents and grandparents and structured interviews were used to children. It is expected a contribution to the understanding of the influence of grandparents in the education of their grandchildren, as well as in the development of preventive strategies for the extended families.
