Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a mind-body intervention with an emphasis on mindfulness on the quality of life of UFMG’s health workers in the context of COVID-19. This is a quasi-experimental study that measures before and after. The main indicators used were obtained by applying the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-brief) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), to measure quality of life and levels of depression, anxiety and stress, respectively. 111 workers participated in the research, 63 allocated to the intervention group and 48 to the waiting list group, who signed the Informed Consent Form (FICF). The intervention: eight synchronous weekly meetings, for one hour: 1) Initial meditation; 2) Check-in (each participant/volunteer is invited to share a gratitude) with psychoeducation, when relevant; 3) Mindfulness or Visualization Meditation (mind-body practice); 4) Orientation of individual practices to be carried out during the week. In the intervention group, the results show a significant difference between the time intervals (p-value < 0.001) regarding the quality of life perception, health satisfaction and the four domains of the WHOQOL (Physical, Psychological, Relationships Social and Environment). The highest means are observed after the intervention, while, in the waiting list group, there is a significant negative difference only in the Psychological Domain of WHOQOL-brief. There is also an important reduction in the levels of depression, anxiety, stress and total DASS21 score, since the difference found between the times is significant (p-value < 0.001). Similar results do not occur in the waiting list group. The results obtained regarding the frequency of participation in the meetings suggest a significant increase in gratitude (p-value = 0.003). Based on these results, this intervention proves to be viable and effective in the context of the experience carried out and, ideally, in other sociocultural spaces in which self-knowledge, self-care and gratitude are considered relevant for the transformation of individuals into more humanized people.
