| Sumario: | The application of digital cartography to the study of environmental, economic, and social themes is a reality in higher education, but not in elementary education in many Brazilian schools. Generally, the teaching of cartography at the elementary level often occurs passively, meaning that students receive ready-made maps and analyze them, frequently without grasping the construction of the cartographic product. This article unveils a teaching experience from a hands-on perspective, namely, through the practice of computer-assisted cartographic production, referred to as digital cartography. The methodology employed the use of free and open-source software as well as collaborative cartographic databases. The results revealed that elementary school students are interested and fully engaged in the production of computer-assisted thematic maps. In turn, the created maps allowed for the study of local, regional, and national reality, contributing to the expansion of human understanding and perception of the lived space and landscapes. |
