Sumario:The interest for the alkaline-earths are mainly related to the radioactive contamination of the hiological materiais either from the nuclear explosion debris or from the natural environment. Radiation dosimetry and physiological studies in people contaminated in the early twenties with radium showed the carcinogenic activities of the radioactive alkaline earths. As those elements behave similarly to calcium they are bone seekers and irradiate the bones during a long period of time. The biological discrimination against some of the non normal methabolites alkaline earths like barium and radium should be studieed in the plant kingdom which is the principal source for those elements in the human diet. The uptake of radium and radioactive barium by soybeans and barley plants was studied either from soil and from nutriente Solutions both at two different pH. The uptake and translocation of those elements is intimately related tho the pH of the médium and increases as the pH gets dose to seven. Barium is normally considered a non physiological element. However Brazil nut concentrates a high levei of this element and this may explain the abnormal level of radium in the nut. Barium measurements in several plants, including some nuts, using X ray fluorescence spectrometry showed higher levei in the Brazil nut. Tomatoes and barley showed a normal development when growing in nutrient solution containing 10-5M Ba but at higher Ba leveis the plants presented sulphur difficiency.
