Resumo:Introduction: The diastema represents excess spaces between adjacent teeth and are desirable in deciduous and mixed dentitions. Already on permanent, they consist of pathologies that compromise aesthetics. May be due, among other factors, the characteristic pattern of craniofacial growth of each individual. With respect to facial type, facial patterns can be classified as dolichofacial, mesofacial or brachyfacial. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of diastema and their association with facial typology, as well as the clinical implications of this relationship can to bring it. Methods: This survey was conducted by clinical documentation of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, dental clinics in the city of Aracaju - SE. 200 records were selected according to the inclusion criteria and ranked as the presence or absence of diastema and the facial type. The diastema were identified through the intraoral photographs and facial types by calculating the VERT index cephalometry Ricketts. The collected data were subjected to chi-square test (α = 5%). Results: The sample consisted of 64 individuals with diastema, with a prevalence of anterior location in the upper arch. Consisted of 88 men and 112 women, with 95 patients having brachyfacial standard, 61 mesofacial and 44 dolichofacial. Conclusion: A significant association between the presence of diastema and facial types, with the highest prevalence of brachyfacial with diastema due to their dental and skeletal characteristics.
