| Summary: | Considering the strategic role of education in promoting economic development, this investigation aims to identify potential positive effects of the expansion experienced by the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) between 2007 and 2014 within the scope of REUNI. Of a qualitative nature, applied purpose, exploratory level and deductive method, the study is outlined as a bibliographical and documental research supported by descriptive analysis. The relevance of the analysis carried out is evidenced by the need to broaden the discussions related to the allocation of resources to universities, understood as fundamental pieces for the promotion of economic development and, in view of the current scenario of budgetary restrictions imposed on them. It was found that UFJF experienced a process of significant growth due to REUNI, with expansion of vacancies, physical structure and human resources. Postgraduate studies also experienced significant growth in quantitative and qualitative terms, despite the backdrop of successive budgetary constraints that marked the period after REUNI. However, the current scenario of budget constraints imposed on Brazilian federal universities both compromises new advances and exposes the imminent risk of a setback with regard to actions already implemented. |
