Sumario:Introduction: Neoplasms that affect the oral cavity and pharynx represent a public health problem. Its incidence and prevalence is high, being considered of high mortality, and may vary from region to region. Objective: To characterize the rate of hospitalizations and deaths from malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity and pharynx in the municipality of Montes Claros-MG between 2008 and 2018. Material and Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative study. The research universe was the database of the Unified Health System Hospital Information System regarding the rate of hospitalizations and deaths from neoplasms of the mouth and pharynx in the municipality of Montes Claros, from 2008 to 2018. Results: A total of 2460 hospitalizations were recorded, with an average of 224 per year. There was a predominance of males (76.1%), between the age group of 50 to 69 years (55.9%), mixed race (76.9%), hospitalized as emergencies (65.1%), in the private sector (68.7%), with a longer average stay in the public sector (11.4 days). The private sector is responsible for most of the expenses - 5.54 million reais (55.5%). The mortality rate showed a mean rate of 7.85% being higher in males, more expressive in patients aged 0 to 9 years (16.67%), above 80 years (13.48%). Conclusion: The rates of mouth and pharynx cancer showed stabilization, this fact may be the result of less exposure to risk factors and improved diagnosis.
