An oral corpus of 716 synthetic structures derived from 24 interviews were used for the analysis. The interviews were made with the native speakers from Salvador, Brazil. It is hypothesized that verb forms and alternative structures are three variants which are part of a linguistic variable conditioned by structural factors (sentence type, verb modality, conjunction type and structure type) and also by non-structural factor (genre, age range, educational level). It is also assumed, by hypothesis, that subjunctive forms are preferably used by Salvador native speakers, as a case of stable variation. The objectives of the study were (a) to investigate to what extent Salvador native speakers use each of these three variants in the Imperative Context as well as in the Subjunctive Context; (b) identify the factors that significantly favor or not the use of these variants; (c) check whether alternative structures used by Salvador native speakers in contexts in which present subjunctive is prescribed are those present in the literature and whether any of these structures is preferred. The data were subjected to a quantitative analysis. The results revealed a predominant use of the subjunctive in imperative contexts (coordinated clauses; men; young and elderly groups; 'secondary education) and in subjunctive contexts (adverbial and subjunctive clauses; uncertainty and volition; women; young, average level of education). In addition, the phenomenon was considered a case of stable variable.

In addition, the phenomenon was considered a case of stable variable.Neste trabalho, analisa-se, à luz da Teoria da Variação e Mudança Linguística (LABOV, 1972), a coocorrência de formas do presente do subjuntivo, de formas do presente do indicativo e de estruturas alternativas, em contextos nos quais se prescreve o uso das primeiras. Nessa análise, foi utilizado um corpus constituído de 716 estruturas sintáticas extraídas de 24 entrevistas, gravadas com falantes de Salvador; partiu-se da hipótese de que as referidas formas verbais e as estruturas alternativas são três variantes que constituem uma variável linguística condicionada por grupos de fatores estruturais (Tipo de oração, Modalidade do verbo, Tipo de conjunção e Tipo de estrutura) e grupos de fatores não estruturais (Gênero, Faixa etária e Nível de escolaridade). Assumiu-se, também por hipótese, que as formas do subjuntivo são as preferencialmente usadas pelo falante soteropolitano e esse caso de variação caracteriza-se como uma variável estável. O estudo buscou: (a) verificar em que proporção os falantes de Salvador utilizam cada uma dessas três variantes, tanto no Contexto de Imperativo quanto no Contexto de Subjuntivo; (b) identificar os fatores que favorecem, ou desfavorecem significativamente essas variantes; (c) verificar se as estruturas alternativas usadas pelos falantes de Salvador nos contextos em que é prescrito o presente do subjuntivo correspondem, apenas, às registradas na literatura e se há predominância de uso de alguma(s) dessa (s) estrutura (s). Os dados foram submetidos a análise quantitativa, cujos resultados constataram o uso predominante do subjuntivo, favorecido: no Contexto de Imperativo (por oração coordenada, gênero masculino, jovens e idosos, nível médio de escolaridade) e no Contexto de Subjuntivo (por orações adverbial e substantiva, modalidades volição e incerteza, gênero feminino, jovens, nível médio de escolaridade).
