| Sumario: | A global wave of democratic erosion has been affecting many countries and their institutions, such as universities, due to the election of authoritarian leaders like Jair Bolsonaro and the effects of the neoliberal rationality. This paper investigates if and how Bonsolnaro’s acts against academic freedom, in its institutional dimension, reveal fundamental aspects of that wave. Based on an empirical methodology, informed by literature review and case study, we traced the profiles of the winning candidates that were not nominated by president Bolsonaro for the federal universities rectorship and of the second or third names of the tiple list that were chosen by the ex-president for the from 2019 to 2021. The data analysis shows that the former president, in some cases aiming a political and ideological alignment with the federal universities, broke a tradition so far seen as essential to their institutional autonomy: the nomination of the winner of the triple list democratically elaborated by the universities. |
