Sumario:Conservation Units (UCs) play a fundamental role in preserving ecosystems, both nationally and globally. History reveals a continuous concern with environmental conservation, since ancient times, resulting in the creation of protected areas. In Brazil, although the first legal environmental conservation initiatives date back to the colonial period, it was only in 1937 that the first national park was established. This study addresses the evolution of UCs in Brazil, from the colonial period until the implementation of the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC), in 2000. The central objective is to carry out a detailed analysis of the evolution, current state and future perspectives of UCs in Brazil. The methodology adopted was a narrative review, which allowed a comprehensive analysis of the historical trajectory, legislation and environmental conservation practices. The results indicate significant advances in the management of UCs with the introduction of SNUC, however, persistent challenges were also identified. The use of the SWOT matrix as an analytical tool suggests improvements in the management of UCs, emphasizing the need for public policies and adaptive strategies to improve their management and maximize environmental and social benefits. The results of this study reinforce the premise that the effective protection of natural areas is fundamental to Brazil’s environmental sustainability, providing significant guidancefor the future development of conservation policies and practices in the country.
