Sumario:This article aims to highlight the methods currently used to obtain dates related to rock engravings, elaborating a framework of archaeological research, both at the world level and at the Brazilian level, aimed at obtaining chronologies from the previous human occupations that were dedicated the engraved symbolic creations. The results of the researches already done with rock engraving dates in Brazil indicate occupations in the Holocene period and temporal persistence with this technique of execution in the same rocky support, besides the reutilization, through revivals in the same symbologies, by later graphic groups.
