Sumario:This article examines the role of Customs in Rio de Janeiro as part of the dynamic political and administrative city under Portuguese overseas empire in the first decades of the eighteenth century. The men of business who bought the contract of duty of Customs and their networks of relationships between various actors reveal an administrative change based on a negotiation with the Crown. The Rio de Janeiro, through the Customs, shows a structure of relationships with other parts of the Portuguese empire. This article discusses some of these elements addressing the networks of relationships, conflicts and negotiations between the conquerors and the Crown.
