Resumo:Seventy horses were utilized, twenty healthy horses (GI) and fifty colic horses which survived (GII, n=25) or not (GIII, n=25) after laparotomy. Clinical examination was carried out and blood samples were collected before laparotomy (T0) and after laparotomy (T24h-T240h). Animals from GII, at T0 and animals from GIII, at T0, T24h, T48h, T72h, T96h, T120h, T168h and T240h after laparotomy presented increase of respiratory and heart rates, tissue perfusion time, red blood cell, leukocyte, and packed cell volume. In the same moments the animals from GII and GIII presented decrease of concentration of total plasmatic proteins. The intensity and persistence of theses alterations relates negatively to the animals recuperation and were attributed the time, localization and, severity of obstruction. Laboratorial and clinical analysis in series can be useful for the prognosis of post-operative recovery after laparotomy.KEY WORDS: Acute abdomen, equine, haemogram.
