If in the first case the suggestions of “ambiguity” (Punter), “hesitation” (Todorov) and “unusual irruption” (Callois, 1966) present in authors such as Ann Radcliffe are quite important, in the second case the dimension of verticality will favour the construction of an image that is referred to here as “syntagma horridus”. It is a combination of two loci horridi – a lake and a tree – which will prove decisive both for representing the ethos of the characters and the mythos of O tronco do ipê.Este artigo analisa a espacialidade no romance O tronco do ipê (1871), de José de Alencar, a partir das representações do lago e da árvore, que retomam não apenas as figurações da ficção gótica da segunda metade do século 18, que se irradiaram por todo o Romantismo, mas também a alegoria do Sono e de Narciso presentes nas Metamorfoses de Ovídio. Se no primeiro caso são fundamentais as sugestões de “ambiguidade” (Punter, 1998), “hesitação” (Todorov, 1975) e “irrupção insólita” (Callois, 1966) presentes em autores como Ann Radcliffe, no segundo caso a dimensão da verticalidade irá propiciar a construção de uma imagem que se designa aqui “sintagma horridus”.
