| Sumario: | The article aims to analyze the reasons for the deletion of the novel A Mulata (1896), by Carlos Malheiro Dias (1875-1941), with production, circulation, and consumption in Brazil. The Portuguese writer, by representing, in his own way, Brazil through the recurrent stereotyped image conveyed to mestizos, ended up contradicting a project of nation “imagined” by politicians, intellectuals and artists at the end of the 19th century. The controversy garnered so much attention from readers, causing the pit novel to be reprinted a few months after its first publication, which caused the “fire novel” to pit cursed in the newspapers.
