Sumario:Often taken in questionable way, usually within the meaning of simple hierarchical inversion, the theory engenders carnivalization fundamental categories for its composition. In this paper we will focus on the categories "laughter" and "mask" and will bring a brief history of the theory of Mikhail Bakhtin. For the Russian researcher, the carnival was a series of manifestations of popular culture and medieval and Renaissance a rule, organized and coherent understanding of that world when transported to literary works called "carnivalization literature". The Categories laughter and mask are reinterpreted from the reading of the book A Cultura Popular na Idade Média e no Renascimento: o contexto de François Rabelais.
