Sumario:This study aims to analyze the determinants for adherence and permanence in football of young athletes. The sample consisted of twenty-eight male athletes from the under-17 category of an amateur football club from a city in the western region of Rio Grande do Sul. As a data collection instrument, a questionnaire was used on the sociodemographic characterization and the Inventory of Motivation to the Regular Practice of Physical and Sports Activity, developed and validated by Balbinotti e et al., (2010). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results showed that the average age of the athletes was 16 years and their families are distributed in the economic strata from A to E, with a higher prevalence in stratum C, with 48.5%. As a predominant motivational dimension, it was found Competivity, followed by Pleasure and Health. The most important factors, for football adherence and practice, were related to achieving goals and facing challenges. It is concluded that the young athletes investigated have a great desire for competition, without leaving aside the motivation for pleasure and health.
