Descripción
Sumario:This paper is a synthesis of archaeological research conducted over more than 40 years at Toca do Sítio do Meio (Piauí, Brazil) and the results of anthracological analyses. This site, of rich material culture, shows evidence of occupation since c. 29.000 years cal BP to the historic period. Combustion structures (hearths and combustion features) are prominent among the archaeological remains, showing the important role of fire during the occupation. Seeking to understand the uses of fire in this location and the use of plants involved in this process, we conducted a preliminary anthracological analyzes on charcoal fragments collected during the excavations. Results indicate that these groups practiced opportunistic firewood collection in the semi-deciduous forest vegetation near the rockshelter and in the cerrado and caatinga.
