We investigated linguistic variables (the semantic power of the verb of the main clause, assertiveness of the clause, Sentence verb embedded and type of clause) and social variables (gender and age group of the speaker), in order to describe the variation of the subjunctive, the linguistic and social restrictions that govern it, aiming to contribute to the description and future mapping of this variation in Brazilian Portuguese. In total terms, the present subjunctive presented 23.9% of frequency and the indicative 76.1%.The present subjunctive is implemented in non-factual matrices, of low epistemic certainty, with expression of irrealis modality. Volitive non-factive matrix verbs condition the categorical use of the subjunctive present in the Fortaleza's speech, reflecting the results of other studies with data from the Northeast.

Volitive non-factive matrix verbs condition the categorical use of the subjunctive present in the Fortaleza's speech, reflecting the results of other studies with data from the Northeast.Analisa-se, neste estudo, o uso variável do presente do subjuntivo em alternância com o presente do indicativo, em orações substantivas e orações dubitativas com talvez, no falar culto de Fortaleza, à luz da Sociolinguística Variacionista (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, [1968] 2006; LABOV [1972] 2008), com base em 17 entrevistas do banco de dados Porcufort (Projeto Português Oral Culto de Fortaleza), sendo todos os informantes com formação univesitária, estratificados por sexo e faixa etária. Investigamos grupos de fatores linguísticos (carga semântica do verbo da matriz, estrutura de assertividade da oração, verbo da oração encaixada e tipo de oração) e variáveis sociais (sexo e faixa etária do falante) com o intuito de descrever a variação do subjuntivo em alternância com o indicativo, as restrições linguísticas e sociais que a regem, visando contribuir para a descrição e futuros mapeamentos dessa variação no Português Brasileiro (PB). Em termos totais, o presente do subjuntivo apresentou 23,9% de frequência e o indicativo 76,1 %.
