Descripción
Sumario:This article analyzes the discourse of Vice-President of the Republic Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) with the aim of investigating the possible effects involved in the construction of his ethos. Our corpus consists of the opinion piece written by Mourão in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo in May 2020. We base our analysis on the studies developed by Maingueneau (1989; 2015; 2008; 2011) about the concept of ethos, on Charaudeau's Semiolinguistics (2014; 2015) and on Foucault's theory of power (1979; 1996; 2004; 2008; 2014). Our research highlights that one of the strategies used by the vice-president in his discourse is the construction of an ethos of powerlessness through the reinforcement of the condition of being interdicted by various social agents.
