Summary:The article lists the elements that demarcated the Enlightenment and its influences on education from the 18th century onwards. The study aims to answer: what was the century of lights and what are its contributions to education? As a tool for data collection, the use of texts was prioritized in three moments, namely: first - of the types “answer to the question what is Clarification ?; second - analyzes of Rousseaunian thinking based on the texts “Emílio ou da Educação” and “Projeto de Educação” in Rousseau's approaches to raise debates about humanist education based on the experience of the Social Contract and the foundations of an education for the sensitivity of the modern subject; third - to discuss the legacy of Enlightenment ideas in the educational process in Brazilian reality.
