| Summary: | With the advancement of chronological age, numerous pathologies appear, making the elderly the largest drug users, making them vulnerable to adverse effects and drug interactions, thus practicing polypharmacy. The general objective of this study was to evaluate the possible drug interactions used by the elderly who live in a Home for the Elderly in the city of São Gotardo/MG, identifying possible serious drug interactions. As well as providing technical material to the multidisciplinary team for possible interventions in drug therapy, resulting in an improvement in the quality of life of the elderly. A study of the medications used by the elderly residents of this institution was carried out, with the authorization of the same, being evaluated 34 prescriptions, of both genders, aged over 60 years. 59 potentially serious drug interactions were found. The drug classes most involved in drug interactions were drugs that act on the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. The results imply special care on the part of the pharmacist, together with the health team, in order to institute an adequate pharmacotherapy to minimize the occurrence of potentially serious adverse events. |
