Thus, the independent and/or itinerant lecturers’ activities, with their courses and publications, spread knowledge of the principles of Mechanical and Experimental Science among those men who became protagonists in the transformation of their country into the first industrial power of the world. Amongst those lecturers was John Banks who offered his courses and specialized knowledge in Mechanical Physics and Machinery to many manufacturers, engineers and mechanics, who stood in the forefront of England’s industrial transformation, and was himself one of the main intellectual exponents of this process.Na Inglaterra do século XVIII, os diversos cursos ministrados pelos professores independentes e/ou itinerantes de Filosofia Natural e Experimental, com seus manuais e programas de aulas, baseados, sobretudo, nas teorias físicas newtonianas, constituíram-se nos principais instrumentos da disseminação e popularização de um ideal de Ciência Aplicada, que preconizava efetivamente a aplicação dos resultados do conhecimento científico às necessidades da população e da produção da vida material. Assim, as atividades de cursos e publicações dos professores independentes e/ou itinerantes contribuíram para tornar acessíveis os princípios da Ciência Mecânica e Experimental àqueles homens que foram os protagonistas da transformação da Inglaterra na primeira potência industrial do planeta.
