Descripción
Sumario:The Army Promotion Law of 1850 is considered by the specialized literature as the first attempt to professionalize the Brazilian Army officer corps - still in the nineteenth century. It should be remembered that until 1850, the promotion system did not follow a set of minimum requirements. The promotions law set criteria, and indicated the passage through the then Military School as obligatory for some Army weapons. Thus, the article aims to approach the 1850 promotions law in a broad perspective. This perspective sees the law as part of a set of reforms undertaken by conservatives during the 1840s and 1850s. It also seeks to analyze the relationship between law and changes in the Military School.
