The Herpetofauna of Boqueirão da Onça: an Important Natural Heritage Site in the Caatinga of Brazil

The conservation units of Boqueirão da Onça, Brazil, a mosaic of protected areas located in the sub-middle of the São Francisco River, host the largest continuum of preserved Caatinga vegetation in the world. Although the region represents a biodiversity hotspot in the Caatinga domain, many relevant...

Although the region represents a biodiversity hotspot in the Caatinga domain, many relevant areas remain unsampled for amphibians and reptiles. To fill important knowledge gaps about the distribution, ecology, and diversity of herpetofauna from Caatinga, we present here a list of amphibian and reptile species of the Boqueirão da Onça, in Bahia state, northeastern Brazil. We conducted field expeditions between August 2019 and May 2021, totaling 64 sampling days using six sampling methods. We recorded 76 species, including 24 amphibians, one chelonian, 19 lizards, 27 snakes, and five amphisbaenians. This result represents the highest diversity reported in the Caatinga to date, compared to studies conducted in other locations throughout the domain. Additionally, we extended the geographic distribution of three species, and identified a frog and a lizard as potentially new species. The diversity of mammals, birds, and now amphibians and reptiles found in the area highlights the importance of Boqueirão da Onça as a priority area for conservation programs in the Caatinga domain.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Programa de Pós-graduação em Biodiversidade Instituto de Biociências Letras e Ciências Exatas Universidade Estadual Paulista, São PauloGrimpa Consultoria Ambiental LTDA, ParanáMapinguari-Laboratório de Biogeografia e Sistemática de Anfíbios e Répteis Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Avenida Costa e Silva S/N-Pioneiros, Mato Grosso do SulUniversidade Regional de Blumenau (FURB), Rua Antônio da Veiga, 140, Itoupava Seca, Santa CatarinaPrograma de Pós-graduação em Biodiversidade Instituto de Biociências Letras e Ciências Exatas Universidade Estadual Paulista, São PauloCAPES: 001Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)Grimpa Consultoria Ambiental LTDAUniversidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS)Universidade Regional de Blumenau (FURB)2025-04-29T18:05:57Z2024-08-01info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/article366-385Herpetological Conservation and Biology, v. 19, n. 2, p. 366-385, 2024.1931-76032151-0733https://hdl.handle.net/11449/2972352-s2.0-85203583700Scopusreponame:Repositório Institucional da UNESPinstname:Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)instacron:UNESPengHerpetological Conservation and Biologyinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessCavalheri, Diego Gomiero [UNESP]Capela, Danilo José VieiraSantana, Diego JoséMariotto, Lucas FerriolliMângia, Sarah2025-04-30T14:28:39Zoai:repositorio.unesp.br:11449/297235Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttp://repositorio.unesp.br/oai/requestrepositoriounesp@unesp.bropendoar:29462025-04-30T14:28:39Repositório Institucional da UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP)false
