Sumario:Mature forms of social role play enable complex development of symbolic function as an indispensable aspect for the development of the child's personality in preschool age. This article presents the results of an investigation carried out with a group of 20 preschool-age children from the city of Bogotá, Colombia, based on an intervention that used social role play. Characteristics of social role play and symbolic function are identified as both become more complex through the orientation offered by the adult. In general, a transformation can be seen both in the game and in the symbolic function, especially in the possibility of understanding and valuing the other. It is concluded that symbolic development allows the formation of self-denial attitudes in children. Consequently, she develops the ability to see the world through the eyes of others in communicative interactions of emotional reciprocity.
