| Sumario: | The article examines the novel A Rainha do Ignoto (1899), by Emília Freitas, demonstrating the formal innovations of the text, built on the basis of fantastic and Gothic literature. We seek to understand how these literary traditions helped to build a plot that critically contrasts two planes, one real and one utopian, which establish a subversive reference to the turbulent Brazilian political environment of the time. Furthermore, the gender constructions of the main characters of the novel are discussed, bearing in mind the particular appropriation that Freitas makes of the Gothic form to narrate the relationship between fear and sexual gender. |
