| Sumario: | This study aimed to analyze the relationship between incarceration and drug trafficking, considering the state of Minas Gerais, one of the most important in the country, in the period 2013-2017, through the estimation of an econometric model with dynamic unbalanced panel data. The results pointed out that incarceration acts as a promoter of drug trafficking crime, since the aftereffetcs, as well as the social disruption effects that imprisonment generates, outweigh the deterrence and incapacitation effects. In this sense, the overcrowding of prisons and the precarious conditions verified in the Brazilian prison system stand out as catalysts of the aftereffects. |
