Sumario:Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) is an emergent zoonosis caused by the bacterium genus Rickettsia, transmitted by bite of infected ticks, flea and mite. It can be fatal if not correctly diagnosed, being the dogs considered as sentinels. The objective of the present study was to estimate the number of positive cases in dogs BSF distributed in urban area of Botucatu/SP, by Immunofluorescence Assay, randomly chosen during 41st annual vaccination campaign against rabies in dogs and cats, in Botucatu/SP. Six dogs were found (0.94%) serologically reactive to Rickettsia rickettsii, with titers ranging from 1:64, 1:128 and 1:256, and this represents a ratio of occurrences equal to 9.3 ‰ suspected of 640 dogs sampled. Considering the construction of the 95% confidence intervals for the population proportion of suspects, we can say that, for every 1,000 dogs of the population of Botucatu has become a minimum expectation 2-17 infected dogs, so in an estimated 30,000 dogs, it is expected 60-510 infected dogs. The results of this study allow us to infer risk of BSF in humans in the city. A more accurate surveillance should therefore be conducted, including research and ticks of the etiologic agent associated with serology.
