Descrição
Resumo:Objective: To analyze the determinants of maternal and newborn health associated with exclusive breastfeeding in three maternity hospitals in Espírito Santo. Method: Cross-sectional, multicenter study, with data from a larger study called Projeto Viver. The sample consisted of 3,438 mother-infant pairs. The relationship between exclusive breastfeeding practiced in maternity hospitals, data related to the mother, newborn and prenatal care was performed using the chi-square test. Logistic regression was used to assess the variables that most influence women in exclusive breastfeeding. The significance level adopted was 5%. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding before hospital discharge was 85.2%. Breastfeeding in the first hour of life was not practiced by 91.2% and 75.4% of women did not participate in educational activities during prenatal care. In logistic regression, women under 19 years of age and babies born with normal weight and at term are more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding while still in the maternity ward. Conclusion: The fulfillment of public policies in favor of breastfeeding must be mirrored in the need to guarantee economic and social support so that exclusive breastfeeding reaches the goals established by the WHO.
