| Sumario: | The disputes over who can establish a truth about gender are present in various social spaces, and school is one of them. For transvestites and transgender women, school is an environment of difficult permanence, with many and varied episodes of violence by classmates and by the condescension of teachers and administrators. However, it is at school that many of them meet peers and begin to understand about themselves, especially from the bonds of friendship they have built. In this article, based on the experiences of six transvestites and transgender women, we discuss the violence faced, the influence of support from school professionals and, especially, the effects of the bonds developed at school on the schooling of this group. These bonds provide recognition and protection, with effects on the present and future schooling. They do not guarantee linear trajectories and eliminate violence, but they soften it, reduce loneliness and broaden coping strategies, making school less hostile. |
