Resumo:Assessments of reading comprehension of elementary and high school students point to unsatisfactory levels of achievement, highlighting that the teaching of reading comprehension requires thorough understanding. The purpose of this paper is to reflect about the knowledge of the main processes and factors that influence reading and its relationship with the Oral Retelling, a consolidated instrument for the assessment of reading comprehension. By using this well-organized, planned procedure the reader can attain deeper levels of comprehension, for it stimulates deeper reader-text interaction which generates a more autonomous and critical reading. The planned application of the Oral Retelling to observe the factors influencing reading comprehension helps teachers to be able to observe their students’ reading skills and, consequently, direct their instruction to the students’ real needs to improve their comprehension.
