Resumo:The article discusses the development of the project “Roots and resistances” carried out in the Quilombo Cafundó Community, which is in Salto de Pirapora, São Paulo, Brazil, built by graduate and posgraduate students and teachers from public schools. The project has thriven because of the demands of the community when they came into contact with the research project: "Quilombola children and their contributions to the Education of Ethnic-Racial Relations and Quilombola Education", endowed by the MCTI/CNPQ/UNIVERSAL nº. 14/2014. The project focus on literacy and inicial reading instriction with adults in the community. Besides, some of them still speak their mother tongue: Cupópia .  Weekly meetings with didactic plans inspired by Freire's conceptions has been (FREIRE 1980; 1992; 2005). Based on oral history (FERREIRA, 2002), it has been noticed the relationship regarding to the quilombo contemplated a triad of teaching, research and extension, enabling participants to experience reading and writing fullfiled by delightful exchanges of learning.
