| Summary: | The patent system is strategic for industries and research institutions. Although the Brazilian Industrial Property Law prohibits the patenting of living beings and their parts, there are loopholes to protect innovations with raw materials from biodiversity. In order to present a panorama of pharmaceutical inventions involving biodiversity, a search was conducted in the database of the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property of pharmaceutical products and processes with active ingredients derived from plants, animals and microorganisms. The results showed that companies and universities have filed patent applications claiming extracts, pharmaceutical compositions and innovative processes for obtaining them from biodiversity. |
