Sumario:Recently, the literature suggests an association between periodontal disease and cancer, although few studies. In this way, young individuals with periodontal disease and loss of molar teeth have a higher risk of premature death caused by diseases such as malignant neoplasm, cardiovascular diseases and diseases of the digestive system. Thus, an association between periodontal disease and tooth loss with breast cancer has been found. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the presence of periodontal disease and tooth loss in women with breast cancer. For this study were selected 31 patients Mastology Clinic of HUCAM/UFES in treatment of breast cancer, as different anti-cancer therapeutic protocols (surgery with lymph dissection, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or radiation associated with tamoxifen and only tamoxifen) and at least one (01) oral site presenting periodontal pockets with probing depth and clinical attachment level ≥4,0 mm. Data were statistically analyzed by mean tests, standard deviation, Student t test and ANOVA. After prophylaxis, oral hygiene instructions and topical application of fluoride, the following clinical parameters were recorded: Probing depth (PB), clinical attachment level (CAL), visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding index (GBI), bleeding on probing (BOP), suppuration (SUP), tooth mobility (TM), furcation lesions (FL), tooth loss and medical and dental anamnesis questionnaire. In this study, the PB parameters and NIC significantly associated more frequently with smoking and the lymphatic drain; and the loss of lower teeth showed significant association with antineoplastic therapy and the level of clinical attachment. It is concluded that periodontal disease and tooth loss can have a relationship with breast cancer.
