Sumario:A cancer diagnosis can have a significant psychosocial impact on the lives of patients and their families. It can also lead to experiences of loss during the illness and treatment process. The aim of this study was therefore to understand how patients diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers experience the losses arising from the illness and treatment process and what relationship they build with the theme of death. The study was based on a qualitative approach, developed in an oncology hospital in the state of Maranhão, involving a sample of 6 people, 3 patients and 3 caregivers.  The data was collected in December 2023 and February 2024 by means of a sociodemographic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews and then analyzed using Bardin's content analysis method. Three categories emerged as a result: experience with diagnosis and treatment; coping resources; and future prospects. From this, it was considered that for some patients and caregivers the subject of death was still avoided and distanced, while for others the use of faith was used as an instrument to offer answers to their concerns.
