As we will see, the religious experience in Taylor is not only thought of as a mystical-religious experience, according to James's approach, but also as an ethical-moral experience. From the phenomenological notion of the world, we outline the basic understanding of belief in the pre-modern world, followed by the modern transformations caused by the disenchantment of the world and the Protestant Reformation. Then, we focus on the individualist cultural revolution of the 20th century, putting into perspective the impacts on the understanding of belief. For Taylor, although religious experience has been understood more and more as an individual experience, the content of that experience is still collective.O artigo dialoga com o conceito de experiência religiosa em Charles Taylor. Nosso propósito é tanto confrontar a noção emergente de experiência religiosa da obra de William James com a concepção que Taylor formula, quanto inserir a noção tayloriana no contexto maior de sua obra. Como veremos, a experiência religiosa em Taylor não é pensada apenas como uma experiência místico-religiosa, conforme a abordagem de James, mas também, como uma experiência ético-moral. A partir da noção fenomenológica de mundo, traçamos a compreensão básica da crença no mundo pré-moderno, seguida das transformações modernas ocasionadas pelo desencantamento do mundo e pela Reforma Protestante. Em seguida, focamos a revolução cultural individualista do século XX, pondo em perspectiva os impactos na compreensão da crença.
