Descripción
Sumario:This study addresses a significant chapter in the evolution of the Spanish translations of Eça de Queirós throughout the Franco dictatorship. It should be noted, in this regard, that the extraordinary novelist was the Portuguese author of all time most punished by censorship in Spain during that time. Special attention is paid to the vicissitudes of the volume Obras inmortales, organized by the Edaf publishing house in 1962, in which five famous novels by Eça de Queirós were offered to readers, several of them translated by Ramón Mª del Valle-Inclán: El crimen del padre Amaro, El primo Basilio, La reliquia, Los Maias and El mandarín. The main importance of this publication lies in the fact that it was a historical milestone, since it included texts by Eça de Queirós that had been repeatedly prohibited until then. The fundamental factors that influenced the favorable position of the Francoist authorities were the luxurious nature of the edition and the indisputably canonical condition of the Portuguese narrator.
