Sumario:Introduction: The performance of the scapular muscles may result in compromises in the shoulder joint. Objective: To analyze the scapular positioning during the abduction movement of the shoulder in the frontal, scapular and sagittal plans to identify injury cases and propose preventive measures for diseases of the shoulder complex. Method: The DASH Questionnaire (Brazil) and a digital inclinometer were used to assess 20 individuals of both genders. Results: No significant difference was found for the right shoulder (concentric and eccentric contraction) at all angles of scapular. Significant difference was found in the left shoulder during the concentric contraction at 90°, and in the eccentric contraction at the scapular angles of 30°, 60° and 90° in the frontal plan compared to women and men. It was found a decreasing in the scapular left shoulder angle during the eccentric contraction above 90° in the scapular and sagittal plans between groups. Conclusion: The scapula behaved differently in the various angles measured and it was influenced by the direction of motion. Furthermore, there is a difference in the rotational behavior of the scapula between the genders.
