Descripción
Sumario:This study was characterized as a descriptive research aimed at analyzing the occurrence of overweight and obesity among children aged 6 to 7 years with above-normal weight in the municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná. The sample consisted of 221 students enrolled in the first grade of elementary school, including 108 boys and 113 girls. To diagnose the nutritional status of the students, the criterion proposed by Waterlow, as suggested by the School Health Committee of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, was used, which considers weight-for-height and height-for-age indices based on the NCHS standard. Additionally, a questionnaire was applied to examine some environmental factors related to the students. In general, high rates of overweight and obesity were observed, especially among female children. Based on the results and information gathered from the questionnaire, it is presumed that these rates are due to inadequate nutrition, lack of dietary control by guardians, and physical inactivity.
