Resumo:Currently, the role of the oral language for the development of reading and communicative competence is unquestionable. However, the promotion of the oral communication competence has not been obtaining the same attention from investigation as reading. This study concisely describes a programme to promote the development of the oral communicative competence (CCO) – Communication and oral expression: speaking, listening, and reading in middle school – aimed for the 7th grade, and presents the results of the empirical study which analysed the impact of its implementation throughout one schoolyear in two public schools of Northern Portugal. The design used was quasi-experimental, involving a sample of 122 participants. The effects of the programme were assessed using GOAOCC – Grid for observation and assessment of the oral communicative competence, which assesses the verbal, paraverbal and non-verbal skills comprised in CCO, based on a Likert scale of 5 points (from 1=poor to 5=excellent). The results of the statistical analysis (MANCOVA and ANCOVA) show that the experimental group presents considerable high gains compared with those in the control group, not only on the three areas that are part of the CCO, but also on the total score.
