| Resumo: | This article aimed to produce a dialogue among historians who researched the theme of memory and silencing of the “vanquished” in History, critically confronting them with the productions of memoirists who wrote about the history of the municipality of Valinhos, in the state of São Paulo. In understanding that memory is an instrument of power and political struggle between social groups, it was identified the influence of the historiographic methods of researchers from the Historical and Geographical Institute of São Paulo (IHGSP) on authors from Valinhos, whose productions overshadowed the memory of native and enslaved African people. As an instrument of power, the constructed memory silenced certain narratives and sought to create a European identity for the municipality. |
