| Sumario: | This thesis focuses on the first daily newspaper of the province of Paraíba do Norte, the Publicador, which was launched in September 1862 and ceased its activities in 1886. Printed by the Tipografia de José R. da Costa, the newspaper was one of the longest lasting during the imperial period in Paraíba, with José Rodrigues da Costa as its founder and owner, both newspaper and the typography workshop bearing his name. Following the death of José Rodrigues da Costa, the property came under the management of the Tipografia dos Herdeiros de José R. da Costa, which continued the typography activities for another twenty-six years in the editorial market of the capital, closing the establishment's operations completely in 1892. Various aspects of the communication circuit associated with the Publicador were identified and analyzed from its inauguration in 1862 until 1869. Despite the newspaper's lasting for more than 17 years, the in-depth analysis particularly focuses on the 1860s due to documentary availability. In the Private Archive Maurílio de Almeida, issues of the Publicador covering numbers 2 to 101 from September to December 1862 were located. In the Digital Hemeroteca of the National Library, digitized copies were found, from number 446 in 1864 to number 2164 in 1869. Additionally, at the Casa de José Américo Foundation, some issues related to the 1870s and 1880s were identified. Inserted in the daily format of the time, the Publicador actively participated in national and international communication networks. Concerning the newspaper's production cycle, the relationships established by the producers served as a backdrop, providing context for understanding discussions and debates on the most relevant issues of society at the time. Regarding circulation, a mapping of the references used by the newspaper in the years 1862, 1864, 1866, and 1868 was conducted, covering a variety of topics and reports from various countries. As for the newspaper's uses, the editorial sought to establish itself as a diary, employing strategies of engagement, while the public used it to disseminate personal matters. |
