| Sumario: | This article aims to discuss the construct of ‘Phonological Awareness of Additional Languages (AL)’ by proposing two premises: (i) this construct encompasses two distinct sorts of knowledge, which are strongly related to each other; (ii) activities that develop phonological awareness in the Additional Language must be present throughout all stages of academic life. With regard to the first premise, we argue that Phonological Awareness of AL involves both the development of metaphonological skills and knowledge on the specificities of the phonological system of the new language, as well as on the formal differences between the L1 and AL systems. As this construct demands learners’ knowledge on the specificities of the new language, we therefore highlight the relevance of the second premise. Based on the Model of Four Levels of Literacy (AUTOR), we propose a discussion on the importance of integrating the phonetic-phonological component to other linguistic aspects in order to foster competent users of the language. |
