Sumario:This paper aims to discuss the use of libraries’ websites as communication tools that can enhance the relationship among these organizations and their several publics, taking into account web technological and communicational potential. The study highlights that library managers must consider these websites and make them able to performance its several functions since they represent the library in the web. It emphasizes that the use of websites as communication tools can be analyzed in its performance of the communication function. The communication process through websites must occur in a two way direction, from libraries to their publics and from their publics to the libraries. The results of studies undertaken based on the classification of library websites functions are presented in order to verify the communication function performance. The results indicate that these websites have not been exploring the technological potential of the web and preview bias of asymmetric communication since websites have been used in a not balanced communication process.
