| Resumo: | This study discusses sporting experiences under way in Rio de Janeiro between 1851, when the first two clubs had been already founded, and 1868, when a key and long-lasting association was created – the Jockey Club. To reach that aim, newspapers and magazines published in the city in the period under consideration were used as sources. Finally, we concluded that the combination of internal aspects of the sports field with external/contextual factors helps to understand why sport only developed in the Brazilian capital in the late 1860s. |
