Descripción
Sumario:The aim of this literature review is to present and discuss research on dropout and persistence in undergraduate science and math courses, identifying the main reasons for dropout, persistence, and institutional strategies proposed in Brazilian publications. 31 articles were analyzed, selected through national journal search mechanisms. The main identified causes of dropout were devaluation of the profession, teaching methods used, difficulty in balancing study with other activities, difficulties in learning science content, and financial difficulties. To promote persistence, identification with the course and future profession, participation in projects, and support actions for first-year students were highlighted. Some strategies for combating dropout and promoting persistence include support for incoming students and improvement of university professors' practice.
